A long mRNA poly (A) tail serves to block entry to the 5′→3′ and 3′→5′ decay pathways. Once the tail has been shortened, the mRNA is then subject to decay by the exosome (3′→5′) or decapping and 5′→3′ Xrn1p digestion.
