Tuning at first start is not a good idea. It shouldn't die. Most likely you are not getting a good +12V to the unit. The ECU doesn't respond well to a weak electrical system. Be sure you have +12V at start and more once the alternator kicks in.

I had an issue with the wire 12 volt source for the distributor being wired on the wrong post on the starter (SBC). swap the wire to the other post rpms cleaned up and just got a prime shot.
