It wasn’t really until Gen 6 that his special treatment became too much. But with Greninja, he got special treatment before he was even showcased to the audience WebCharizard, Pikachu, and Mewtwo are the three most overrated Pokemon in the series, and they are also heavily marketed. That being said, Mewtwo is one of my favorites, but I would no complain if it took a backseat so Gamefreak can market newer/less popular Pokemon.
